Think you know your designers? Here is a refresher course in the work of some of the world’s top designers.
*Anna Sui began designing as a child, using her mother’s sewing notions to make clothing for her toy dolls. She attended Parsons in New York and launched her own designs in 1981. Her collections include garments that are intricately detailed, feature fashion-forward thinking, feminine aspects and a little touch of hard rock with attitude.
*Alexander McQueen apprenticed for two influential tailor shops before moving on to other positions within the fashion world. McQueen’s lines have received rave reviews. Gucci thought so much of McQueen that they made a 51% purchase of the company. McQueen’s style incorporates clean, tight lines, unexpected patterning and asymmetry with draping.
*John Galliano finds inspiration in cities around the world. His designs are the epitome of eccentric style. Previously the creative director of both Givenchy and Dior, Galliano not only found his niche, he nailed it with precision and class.
*Zac Posen, another designer who studied at Parson’s, was an intern for Nicole Miller. He quickly climbed the ranks and went on to design gowns for some of Hollywood’s hottest stars. His collections feature pattern, texture and details that stand on their own.
*Donna Karan’s line, DKNY, was started in 1984. Her designs range from casual to chic. She has lines for men, women and children as well as accessory lines. Luxurious cashmere is one of her many design characteristics.
*Philip Treacey got his start as a young boy growing up in Ireland. He began making doll clothing for his sisters at a very young age. While he specializes in hat design, as opposed to clothing, his designs are worthy of all the recognition they receive. Bright colors, beautiful trim and fine work are only the tip of the iceberg in Treacey’s collections.
